Art KIT (Know Important Tools), is a workforce education program designed for artists looking to expand their careers by learning the business end of the Arts. Art KIT is aimed at serving artists in Santa Barbara County and the surrounding area.

How to protect your creative work

Our first Art KIT workshop will address trademark, fair use, public domain, and copyright. The morning session will be a panel discussion with four local lawyers and and one local artist. The afternoon session break into four groups to take a deeper dive and allow individuals to ask questions that pertain to specific creative practices. Lunch will be provided.

Meet the Panelists

Matthew Berger

Matthew Berger has been practicing law for 43 years. His practice focuses on entertainment, publishing, music, film, literature, and fine art with an emphasis on trademarks, copyrights, licensing, digital rights, intellectual property issues, business, contracts, and estate planning including drafting Literary Trusts. His practice is in Santa Barbara with clients in Santa Barbara County and throughout California and beyond.

Diana Diaz

Diana Diaz grew up in the Los Angeles area with a camera in her hand. She attended UCSB and Santa Barbara City College before obtaining a Master of Music in Opera Theater. She has directed and performed in opera, choirs, musicals, and plays. She continues working on photography as an art. She had her first solo show last fall and her photos have been featured in publications and art shows.

Ian Smith

Ian Smith (Copyright) is a partner with Stradling’s Santa Barbara office. Ian practices in emerging growth companies, securities, venture capital, mergers and acquisitions, general corporate law and business matters.

Casey Summar

Casey Summar is the managing partner of The Law Firm for Non-Profits where she helps good people do good things by handling the legal needs of nonprofits and their leaders. She serves on the boards of MOXI, The Wolf Museum of Exploration + Innovation and The Colleges of Law, Santa Barbara and Ventura.
